2010 Mobile Skills Calendar

PORTAGE COUNTY CHAPTER 2010 CALENDAR

August

Saturday, August 14-- 9 a.m. Fieldtrip, Pallen Lake Vegetation and Bog Plants, Bird Friendly Gardens, and Prairie Restoration, including a potluck at 12:15 p.m. (If you bring a hot or cold dish, the Shaws want you to drop them off at their place before you to the 9:00 a.m. meeting place at Haney’s place--See below for information about the potluck location.)

9:00 a.m.--Meet at Alan Haney’s place (about 2 miles east of the junctions HWY 66 and CTY “Z” near Polonia or ½ mile west of Junction I and Z. (Haney’s driveway is north of Z at the end of Star B Hill Road.) This will be our parking area for the first two parts of the field trip. Haney’s prairie was planted in 2009. He will explain the preliminaries to planting the prairie and what a one-year old prairie looks like.

9:30-10:00 a.m. We will walk from Haney’s place to Vincent and Arlene Heig’s land on the east side of Pallen Lake. (If you cannot walk this ¼ mile, then drive to Heig’s house at 8360 CTY Z, about ¼ mile west of Star B Road.) You can view features and vegetation.

11:15-11-30 a.m. Walk back to parked cars, then travel to Shaw’s place for a 12:15 p.m. potluck. After the potluck we will view Shaw’s older prairie restoration.

1:00-2:00 p.m. Directions to Margaret and Byron’s place: Return to CTY Z from Haney or Heig sites, turn left (east) and drive about 3 miles to CTY ZZ, turn right (south and drive 1.5 miles south to Shaw Drive, turn right (west) off ZZ and follow their driveway for .3 mile for parking near their house. After the potluck we will view the Shaw’s prairie and also see Byron’s crafted canoes and wood carvings.
